One person has died and six others are injured after a four-car crash north of Dunedin this evening.
The crash occurred near Hawkesbury Village, Karitane, and the man who died was a 64-year-old from Kaikoura.
Two rescue helicopters and two ambulances transported the injured to Dunedin Hospital just after 6pm, and one of the victims remains in a critical condition.
It's the first fatality of the Queen's Birthday holiday period. Last year five people were killed and 28 seriously injured during the same period.
