Two people are dead after a car loaded with seven people rolled onto Foxton Beach Road near Levin.

While police are still investigating the cause of the crash, police say they’re disappointed the message about drink driving still isn’t getting through.

Seven people were in the Ford Telstar when its 19-year-old driver lost control on a corner, flipping the car.

A 15-year-old by and a 20-year-old woman died at the scene.

“If speed or alcohol was a factor, it’s a sad testament that people aren’t getting the message,” says Sergeant Jeff Lyver.

It is believed the two women and five men who were in the crash are from Foxton and Shannon areas.

“It’s too early to say exactly what’s gone on, but if there were seven people in the vehicle it’s obviously overloaded and that may be a factor which we will look into,” says Mr Lyver.

The surviving five were taken to Palmerston North Hospital. Two have been discharged and three, including the male driver, were flown to Wellington Hospital where they are now in Intensive Care.

The Serious Crash Unite is investigating what cause the crash, it’s not yet known if any were wearing seatbelts.
