Police believe a fatal crash in Kawerau this morning was linked to a burglary in the area.
Officers were investigating reports of the theft of two motorbikes when they came across a crash scene that had just occurred on River Rd.
The crash – a collision between one of the stolen motorcycles and a 4WD vehicle – killed a 24-year-old man and injured a 17-year-old man, both on the bike.
The 17-year-old is currently in hospital with serious injuries.
The two people in the 4WD were uninjured in the crash.
The rider of the second motorcycle was later found in town.
An investigation is underway.
