Firefighters are dampening down hot spots tonight after a fire at a Southland tile manufacturing plant.

More than 30 firefighters were called in to fight the blaze at the Southtile building on North Road in Lorneville, Invercargill, which began about 3:45pm.

Fire Service Southland area manager Brendan Nally said the fire was brought under control within a couple of hours, although two crews remained at the scene to dampen down hot spots hours later.

Fire safety would begin investigating the cause of the fire tomorrow morning, Mr Nally said.

"It's a very large building, so finding the cause is probably going to take some time."
