Fourteen fire trucks are "mopping up" a scrub fire on Mt Victoria in Wellington this afternoon.

According to the fire service, the blaze was burning through trees but has now been contained.

It comes after months of hot and dry weather in the city, making perfect conditions for fire.

Senior station officer Stuart Lyall says crews were lucky to be notified of the fire when they were.

"It was starting to move into the lower undergrowth, the pine needles, and is making its way up the hill. We were fortunate enough because of the early calls that we were able to get onto it quick enough to stop it from spreading too far."

There's no suggestion yet of the cause of the blaze, but Mr Lyall says staff will be looking into it.

Mt Victoria is just down the road from the Basin Reserve where New Zealand's Black Caps are currently playing Australia.

The smoke could be seen on TV in some of the camera shots.
