Firefighters make grisly discovery in Woolston fire

Police and fire investigators have confirmed a body was found in a house where a fire broke out in Woolston on Wednesday morning.

Four fire crews responded to the blaze on Rutherford St at 6am and found the property engulfed in flame. Crews were battling to keep the flames from spreading to neighbouring properties.

The fire service reportedly received calls saying a person had been in the house and the body was found inside at the back of the house, police say.

The body is yet to be identified and a post-mortem will take place on Friday.

A neighbour says it was "horrifying" how quickly the property went up in flames. Smoke could be seen billowing across the industrial suburb.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information or images is asked to contact Christchurch Central Police Station on 03 363 7400 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause.
