The first architectural drawings have been released from Christchurch's upcoming multimillion-dollar Metro Sports Facility, depicting massive pool and indoor areas which can seat thousands.

Site works are due to get underway next month with the Government and council-backed project to eventually boast the largest leisure pool in the country, swimming and diving pools, five hydroslides, nine netball courts, a show court with 2500 seats, a gym and other attractions.

Anchor project agency Otakaro believes 40,000 people will use the facility every week when work finishes in 2020. They are still securing contractors and pricing but the council has committed $147 million the project, while the Crown has committed at least $70 million plus the land.

The main construction is due to get underway in the middle of next year at the 34,000 square metre site, which is bordered by Moorhouse Ave, Antigua St, Stewart St and St Asaph St.
