Flooding, slips close part of State Highway 2

The NZTA is warning of delays on State Highway 2 in the Bay of Plenty, after heavy downpours on Wednesday.

The rain caused slips and serious flooding at Matata, closing the highway between there and Paengaroa on Thursday morning.

The section of SH2 from SH33 to Matata is now open in both directions, however motorists can expect some delays while crews clean up after the flooding.

Slips and flooding have also affected over highways in the region.

Motorists are urged to take extra care.

The rain brought local farmer Harry Moss outside on Wednesday night to move his cattle to higher ground.

"At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if half of them are downstream," he said.

"It's crazy, it's come out of nowhere!"
