Civil Defence will begin running a free bus service for Kaikōura residents and those in outlying areas on Tuesday.

Four routes will be on offer, all starting from New World supermarket, which is acting as a makeshift bus interchange.

Mayor Winston Gray says it means locals can stock up on supplies, go to the Recovery Assistance Centre to apply for support and take care of business without using their fuel.

A shuttle will circulate between the New World bus interchange and the central business district, with passengers able to flag it down off the street.

A smaller van will be used to run the other three routes - the northern, inland and southern routes. These routes include South Bay, Peketa, and Mangamaunu.

The free service will run until further notice.
