Auckland's French Café has retained the crown for local fine dining after winning the New Zealand spot in TripAdvisor's international Travellers' Choice awards.

The travel company which annually lists its chosen top restaurants around the world, named the French Café for its second consecutive year.

Executive Chef and restaurant co-owner Simon Wright says they really appreciate the significance of the award as it is based on customers' reviews, from one of the biggest review websites.

"Not only is it a great honour, but it also reaffirms for us that our approach to hospitality is on track," he says.

The list was made using an algorithm to assess the "quantity and quality" of customers' reviews, collected over the past year.

The awards recognised 528 restaurants in total, with a chosen top 25. The French Café came in at 19.

Other New Zealand winners in the 528 included Nelson's Hopgoods, Logan-Brown in Wellington, No. 31 Restaurant and Bar in Hanmer Springs, Napier's Mission Restaurant and Rata in Queenstown.
