Girl Guides suspend Otimai Lodge sale after outcry

It may be just the smallest of victories, but that's more than enough to keep former Girl Guides hopeful of preventing the sale of their beloved Otimai Lodge in west Auckland.

The Girl Guides Association has suspended the current tender on the property.

A stay of execution has been placed on the property, meaning applications will now need to be made to the Attorney General and then the High Court if the sale still goes ahead.

The sale grinding to a halt has come as welcome news to former guides, who have fought tirelessly to prevent the sale of Otimai.

"For us, until the deal is done, it's not done. So we have plenty of hope (of still preventing the sale)," says former guide Debbie Penk.

"We suspect that they need to get the approval of the Wilson descendants to proceed but the Wilson family has already said publicly they are adamantly opposed to the sale."

In 1944 a Trust set up by Girl Guides founder Lucinda Wilson transferred the property, represented by two Certificates of Title, to The Girl Guides Association New Zealand Branch.

Since this date, the Association has been the legal owner of Otimai.

Because of the nature of the trust, there is now an additional step required in the sale process in respect of the two titles that make up the original property.

Those two titles need approval before they can be sold.

To do so, Girl Guiding New Zealand will need to apply to the Attorney General, and then the High Court.

"As part of these applications, a detailed scheme is to be developed as to how the funds will be spent," says Girl Guides NZ spokeswoman Jane Smithson.

"This is a very timely opportunity to seek the opinion of current girl members on how they think this money can be used for the future of Guiding."

But it doesn't mean the sale is completely off the table, with the Girl Guides board reconfirming their intent to sell.

Just whether the potential sale will get past the Attorney General remains to be seen.
