It's a wet start to the school holidays across much of New Zealand, and Gisborne residents are being warned about potential slips and flooding as the region braces for a deluge.

The East Cape is in for a battering, as the heavy rain that caused flooding in Coromandel moves down the country. State Highway 35 is already covered with surface flooding in some areas.

Metservice has issued a severe weather warning, and up to 120mm of rain is expected to fall between midnight and 6am on Tuesday.

Paul Stuart from Tai Rawhiti Civil Defence is warning drivers to be vigilant.

"As you're driving, the road conditions could suddenly change, there could suddenly be a slip, or a stream could come up and suddenly cover the road. So you need to drive to the conditions."

Mr Stuart says the rain's expected to be heaviest north of Tolaga Bay about the hills and ranges.

Roads around the region and up to the East Cape could be cut off by slips and flooding.
