Going bananas over bananas

Bananas, some people hate them, others find them appealing.

No matter what your banana allegiance, it's no secret they rule our lives, not just as food but in popular culture, music, movies and television (don't tell us you didn't watch Bananas in Pyjamas).

Did you know that more songs have been written about bananas than about any other fruit?

Actually, did you know that bananas aren't technically a fruit at all? The plant is a herb and the actual banana is classed as a berry.

So why all this banana talk?

Tomorrow Associate Professor Lorna Piatti-Farnell, director of Auckland University of Technology’s Pop Culture Centre, is releasing a book about bananas. Banana - A Global History peels back the layers and gives looks at all kinds of things you probably never knew about bananas.

Why would anyone write a book about bananas? Piatti-Farnell, who wrote A History of Beef a few years back, recently started noticing bananas everywhere. So she decided to dig, or rather peel, further.

From the plant's origins in New Guinea then its spread through southeast Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas, Piatte-Farnell binds together a millennium of history into one digestible bunch.

So there it is -- your official, all-encompassing guide to banana.

Banana - A Global History is released on Thursday.
