Greenpeace says the Government's $6.4 million injection for a Canterbury irrigation scheme is an environmental mistake.

The scheme sucking water from alpine rivers is being extended.

Genevieve Toop from Greenpeace says it will help dairy intensification: "Many of Canterbury and New Zealand rivers are already becoming increasingly polluted, and that's only going to get worse if Central Plain's water goes ahead."

The Government says the scheme is already a big boost for Canterbury plains' productivity, and that stage two of the scheme will deliver alpine river water to a further 25,000 hectares of productive land.
