A 39-year-old man on trial for the murder of a Tawa woman changed his plea today.

Ernest Smith stood accused of killing Amanda Taufale, a 33-year-old mother-of-two in November last year.

She was violently murdered at her house on Sunrise Blvd, in the suburb north of Wellington.

Ms Taufale's father Graham Redman says the change of plea is a "huge relief".

"This has finally put to rest our fears of attending a trial and reliving the tragic events of last November.

"This has been a tragedy for all concerned but today’s guilty plea will enable us to at last move forward with putting our lives back together, as much as we can," he says.

Smith will be sentenced in the Wellington High Court next month.
