A bus has become "wedged in the mud" down a bank after rolling down a hill when the driver went on a toilet break.

Hamilton's Orbiter bus was parked near the Waikato Hospital building when it rolled around 300 metres down a hill.

The bus was parked at the top of Pembroke St before it ground against a retaining wall and ended down a steep embankment, narrowly missing one of the hospital buildings.

Ben Cain was dropping his son off at the hospital daycare and was one of the first on the scene.

"The bus had basically careered down the road because it damaged the retaining wall as well… and it had taken out a number of the [posts] on its way down."

"It's very lucky that nobody else was injured and no other cars were involved and it's very lucky of course that the bus didn't go crashing into the building at the bottom of the embankment."

Mr Cain says it was very lucky there had been some rain.

"As you can see from the photograph it's pretty much entrenched there, it's obviously gone down and it's reached a point where it can't go any further  because it's literally sunk into the ground."

"Had this been December, January, February where the ground is much drier, I think you would have the bus go straight through that building."

At this stage it is unclear whether the driver forgot to put the handbrake on or if it failed.

There was one passenger on board who was uninjured.

This is the second runaway bus in a week.
