A 44-year-old woman has appeared in the Rotorua District Court this morning where she was charged with the murder of another woman who disappeared last month.

Gwenda Sloane was initially charged with the assault of Michelle Hoffman-Tamm, who was last seen on November 7.

Sloane, who sometimes uses the surname ‘Pluss’, has been stood down until 11:45 to enable a forensic nurse to carry out a psychiatric assessment.

Ms Hoffman-Tamm had left home on her bike, intending to visit some friends up the road before she disappeared. Her red bike was found some time later.

"Significant developments" in the investigation led police to a rural location close to State Highway 38 between Rotorua and Murupara two weeks after she disappeared.

Police also examined a house in Rotorua.
