In the regions, $5000 can go a long way.

In Murupara -- located between Whakatane and Rotorua -- there is a house for sale for just over that amount. It's overgrown and a bit shabby, but it just needs a bit of elbow grease.

The Council is selling the 'solid' 1960s house as 'abandoned land' to regain losses in rates. They say there are similar vacant sections selling for not much more. Get yourself a kit-set home and you're sorted.

Paula Bennett is offering homeless families an opportunity to relocate out of Auckland, and have themselves a nice house with a garden.

Manager of public affairs at the Whakatane District Council Ross Boreham says it's highly likely there is similar, cheap properties in many other parts of the country.

"We also have a number of vacant sections available in Murupara, which could easily have a kitset or re-locatable home dropped on them ready to live in very quick time," he says.
