Homes found for the Kaimanawa horses

All 104 wild Kaimanawa horses mustered from the ranges near Waiouru have been saved, and will today head to new homes around the country.

There had been fears the Department of Conservation's decision to bring the biennial muster forward by a month would mean there wouldn't be enough time to find people willing to adopt the animals.

But Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Trust spokesman Elder Jenks says the 104 brought in will be sent to four yards across the North Island today, then trucked to their new homes.

"We had more people than horses in the end, we were overwhelmed," he says.

South Islanders will have to wait for their wild horses. Around six will be settled by a Hawkes Bay handler before being ferried across Cook Strait.
