A man wanted over the murder of an Auckland homeless man is believed to have been in the southern Wairarapa town of Featherston on Friday night and Saturday morning.

Maqbool Hussain was found dead behind a block of shops in the suburb of Balmoral on Monday last week. Police have confirmed they have a warrant to arrest 28-year-old Justin Vance Turner, who is known in the area.

A man fitting Turner's description – although he was clean-shaven – accepted accommodation at the rear of a private property in the town, Detective Inspector Chris Cahill says.

"A local man had found this person sitting in the main street, so he offered the stranger a bed in his unused house bus for the night. He was last seen walking north out of Featherston at about 7 o'clock on Saturday morning."

Police say Turner is quite distinctive looking, with olive skin and a tattoo on his neck of a dog wearing a spiked collar.

"Turner has a history of violence and should not be approached. Anyone who thinks they have given him a ride, food or accommodation in the past week should contact the investigation team," says Det Insp Cahill.

The public are being urged to share his photo on social networking websites as police work to locate him.

Anyone with information on Turner's whereabouts should contact police on (09) 820 5763 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on (0800) 555 111.
