How Winston won the north

This week in politics can be summed up in one word: Winston.

It was all about Winston Peters' victory in Northland and his return to Parliament as an electorate MP.

The Prime Minister said early in the campaign the New Zealand First leader had "absolutely zero" chance, but with a little help from Labour, the 40-year veteran cruised to an easy victory by thousands of votes.

3 News political editor Patrick Gower says it was an "epic" victory.

"It was a huge upset and he took out John Key… he managed to go in and give the National Party a whipping on their home turf."

So who's the real winner here?

"Labour. He's done some damage to John Key, he's made John Key and Steven Joyce and the National Party machine look weak."

But will Mr Peters cooperate? He doesn't really owe Labour anything.
