Hundreds of people are expected to attend a public memorial for Helen Kelly on Friday organised by the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU) and her family.

The former NZCTU president passed away more than a fortnight ago after a long battle with lung cancer.

She was a strong advocate for Pike River Mine families, forestry and meat workers and hundreds of others across the country.

NZCTU vice-president Rachel Mackintosh says she was the leader of a movement who stood for all working people.

"When she saw an injustice she would act, and that was really inspiring.

"She also encouraged a lot of people to get involved in the work of standing up for other people. That is now our duty. It's our work now to carry on."

Ms Mackintosh says she expects the memorial will be emotional, and Ms Kelly will be missed by all the people she fought for.

"She was involved with creating change for people, being with people, standing with people.

"She remembered everyone that she'd ever met, so she would always know who you were. She was an extraordinary person."

Hundreds of people are expected to turn up to the public service, which will be held at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington, as well as livestreamed into the Auckland Town Hall and the Trade Union Centre in Christchurch.

Newshub will be livestreaming the service from 1pm.
