Hundreds 'Take a Kid Fishing' in Christchurch

Dozens of children were introduced to the time-honoured sport of fishing in Christchurch this morning as part of the official 'Take a Kid Fishing' day.

North Canterbury Fish & Game released salmon and rainbow trout into two lakes at The Groynes picnic area for the event, promising advice and free loans of rods and tackle on the day.

Many kids caught their first fish - one on his very first cast - but there was no luck for Zanthe, who did not give her last name, and had only seen "a few splashes of fishes", despite excellent technique.

"You need to have a bait and a rod, and you put the bait on the rod and cast it", she said.

"You wait very patiently for your floater to bob up and down, and then you wind this thing here in, and you would probably have caught a fish."

The Groynes lakes are designed as a junior fishery and are regularly restocked to help youngsters get a feel for the sport.
