Hunt for lost Dunedin car with dog inside

A lost car in Dunedin with a Chihuahua locked inside has been found tonight thanks to the power of social media.

The SPCA was called after an elderly couple forgot where they'd parked the car.

The organisation appealed to its followers on Facebook to help find the silver Mitsubish Colt Plus, registration DDA96.

The organisation said it was told about the "unusual" case today.

"We're assisting an elderly couple with short-term memory loss who have lost their car today."

The rescuer, Dunedin resident Tasha Jamieson, saw the SPCA post after a friend had shared it on social media.

She headed out to the streets, eyes peeled, and found the missing car on Glasgow St in south Dunedin.

She says she then rang the number on the SPCA post and waited for the owner to collect the car and Mickey the dog.

"I said I'd wait so that I knew the dog was ok. I stayed until the husband came down," Ms Jamieson says.

The dog and owner were pleased to be reunited, she says.

"We'd like to extend our sincere thanks to all the wonderful animal lovers who got out there searching for the car and dog. What a fabulous result!" SPCA posted.
