A Wellington photographer has been documenting street art, in particular paper pigeons that pop up on walls around the capital.

No one knows who is behind the giant birds, so 3 News went out to try and find out where they're coming from.

Hans Weston is a street photographer and was curious to know who's behind the pigeons that keep popping up before washing away in Wellington.

The search for the phantom pigeon artist started in pigeon park near Courtenay Pl, which – as usual – was full of pigeons.

A man who runs an underground pool hall in the city told 3 News he knows many Wellington street artists who claim to be the pigeon artist.

"I've got no idea who's doing them. I do know a couple of people who do paste up works but nothing along the lines of little pigeons in windows."

After some pigeons popped up near the Dowse Museum at Lower Hutt, a woman called Pippa says she claimed know about the artist.

She says the pigeons are they work of a Wellington street artist called Bent.
