A severe weather watch has been put in place for upper and central parts of the North Island over the weekend - with threats of surface flooding and slips in Waikato, including the Coromandel Peninsula.

The extreme conditions are expected to reach the country's western coastline on Saturday night, before moving eastward through Sunday.

The storm is approaching our shores after ripping through South Australia, leaving the entire state without power on Wednesday - an outage that affected a whopping 1.7 million people.

The severe weather will have died off significantly by the time it reaches our shores, but Waikato is set to get a heavy burst of rain.

MetService is warning that between 20 to 40mm is expected to fall on those areas on Sunday, though that could become 40 to 60mm - with a number of northern and western parts of New Zealand getting a decent soaking.

They have also cautioned that thunderstorms could strike - and say the heavy rain that would bring will cause streams and rivers to rise, possibly bringing slips and surface flooding.

MetService has advised people in upper and central North Island regions to remain up-to-date with weather forecasts.
