A 30-year-old inmate has been stabbed at Auckland Prison this afternoon, St John has confirmed.
The man has been taken to Auckland hospital in a critical condition.
Corrections regional commissioner Jeanette Burns said two prisoners were involved in the incident. The other inmate was treated on site.
Police were called to the incident around 2:45pm.
Auckland Prison, also known as Paremoremo, is located on Auckland's North Shore and contains New Zealand's only specialist maximum-security prison unit.
