Injured Cobb Valley tramper took wrong route

Rescuers are hoping to retrieve an injured and inexperienced tramper from Cobb Valley after he was reported missing by his party.

The 30-year-old man was reported missing last night when he failed to meet up with another man and woman he had been tramping with.

Police say they separated around 1:30pm when the man decided to take another route out of the area.

However, help was called at around 6:30pm when he didn't meet the others.

A helicopter failed to find the man last night, but he was spotted by rescuers around 7:30am today where he was found to be injured.

Difficult terrain, however, has stopped ground crews from reaching the man and arrangements are being made to winch him out.

Search coordinator Constable Dave Cogger says the group broke "one of the golden rules" of tramping by choosing to separate.

The man wasn't prepared for a night in the bush, didn't appear to have tramping experience and the route he took was more difficult than he thought.

"His companions have told us he took the alternate route because he was experiencing difficulties due to his fitness level. Unfortunately the route he has taken was significantly more challenging and would have been difficult for experienced trampers to complete," Const Cogger says.

Conditions in the area are good and the man is expected to be rescued this morning.
