The man who sparked a manhunt across the central North Island last year has died behind bars.

Dolphy Kohu was found in an unresponsive state on Friday at Whanganui Prison.

Whanganui Prison director Reti Pearse says medical attention was provided to the prisoner, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was charged with numerous offences, including attempted murder after firing at police, and going on the run in August.

The death has been referred to the Coroner and is subject to an investigation by the Prison Inspectorate and Police.
