With Christmas just around the corner, it's time to start thinking about how to decorate your home appropriately.

And living in a pokey city apartment doesn't mean you can't go big with festive cheer.

Interior designer Sylvia Sandford gave Paul Henry some tips on how to make the most of a small space and she says there's no excuse to not decorate.

"You've got to be able to actually fill your home with inspiration. It's not too small."

"Most small spaces are painted in light colours. Take that as a starting point. Consider getting perhaps a white tree to sit against a white wall, decorated with lots of LED lighting. And consider glass - it's transparent, it actually visually makes places feel bigger."

"Don't just leave it to the living spaces where people see. What about the bathroom? Get a glorious little Christmas hand towel. Bedroom? Velvet cushions could go on the bed, or even a Santa toy sitting on the bed."

"I think a really clever idea is to use dry branches, and buy baubles, bangles, beads, do whatever you like with those, and spread them around the tree - just hang them. In Europe, where they often have very small houses, they'll buy bows of green fir and toss them onto the top of great big dressers and armoires. What about the chandelier? Dress the chandelier with gorgeous green fir."
