Hundreds of international students in Auckland have begun sitting exams which could decide whether they can stay in New Zealand.

They were all enrolled at the International Academy of New Zealand (IANZ), which has now closed-down after being accused of falsifying test results.

To ensure they comply with New Zealand qualifications standards they have to re-sit the exams with a new school, Edenz Colleges.

The students' success will decide whether they will be deported or not.

One student said they have all been left nervous about their futures.

"We asked a few questions from the NZQA, we asked from the Edenz, we asked from the immigration as well so what they exactly said, if we didn't achieve then EDENZ didn't charge for the fees but when we asked other students they were unsure."

The students' uncertainty comes after an NZQA investigation found serious problems with the way IANZ tested students.

Tutor Jaswinder Kaur told Newshub she was asked to falsify English language tests at the school to make sure the students passed.

The students say sometimes no teachers even showed up.

We wanted to ask owner Exzur Peralta about the management of his school but he didn't answer our calls and wasn't home when we visited.

Exam results are due in a couple of weeks.
