International tsunami workshop opens

Monday 12 Aug 2013 12:34 p.m.

Disaster management officials from 15 Pacific islands are in Wellington learning about tsunami warning systems.

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye opened the workshop on Monday and says it's about enabling countries to issue more accurate warnings.

"With the majority of the world's earthquakes and tsunami occurring in the Pacific and the seas on its margins, it's very important that Pacific Island nations are prepared," she said.

"Between 2009 and 2013 we have seen several destructive and deadly tsunami in the Pacific - we can't prevent them happening but we can work towards improving our warning and response arrangements."

The workshop is being run by the Ministry of Civil Defence and GNS Science.

Countries attending are the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
