Police have identified the body of the 29-year-old man suspected of shooting a 50-year-old woman in Invercargill.

Police were called just after 6:30pm on Tuesday night to a residential property on Otatara Road after receiving reports that someone had been shot.

They found the woman with critical injuries, and she was transferred to hospital, where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

Early Wednesday morning police found the body of the 29 year-old man who was believed to be involved in the shooting incident at the same address.

Police have completed the formal identification process for the deceased and can confirm he was Kevin Johnston of Invercargill.

He is suspected to have suffered a self-inflicted injury and his death has now been referred to the Coroner.

Police can confirm the woman was the only other person injured in this incident.

"I would like to again thank the Otatara community for their cooperation and patience while police attended the incident last night," says Southland Area Commander, Inspector Joel Lamb.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time," says Mr Lamb.

Police are unable to comment further.
