The lower South Island has lucked out in the Anzac Day weather lottery with chilly west to south-westerly winds and showers expected.

Invercargill in particular is set for a cold and damp start tomorrow with temperatures dropping to 6degC just before dawn, rising to around 14degC.

Chair of the Invercargill RSA, Norm Wilson, says the weather will probably put a dampener on turnout for the dawn service but they will be putting in the effort regardless.

"We can't do much about the weather but it's only showers, people should still come to mark their respects," says Mr Wilson.

The rest of the country is looking good weather-wise for Anzac Day with Gisborne and Hawke's Bay the places to be, according to MetService.

Despite a chilly start for those getting up before dawn, any morning cloud will quickly burn off with a warm, sunny day expected.

"Gisborne and Hawke's Bay would be my pick, but Wellington is looking like it will be very nice as well," says MetService meterologist Emma Blade.

"The rest of the country is also looking good, with sunshine for most and just a bit of cloud around early."

Ms Blade says temperatures for most of the main centres will be fairly typical for this time of year, with colder starts but temperatures rising into the 20s for the likes of Auckland and Hamilton as the day progresses.

A severe weather watch is in place for coastal areas in the lower south on Anzac Day, with winds expected to become gale-force in the afternoon through until Tuesday morning.
