A coronial investigation has been launched after a death at a medicinal detox clinic in the Far North, which uses the controversial drug Ibogaine.
The woman was reportedly being treated with the psychoactive substance, for an opiate addiction at a Kaitaia clinic, when she died last month.
Ross Bell from the Drug Foundation says patients aren't made aware of the risks, including death.
"We're dealing with vulnerable people, who are being sold something that hasn't really been proven in clinical settings, 'that addiction that you've been struggling with for years, we can fix it within three days' - that's an attractive proposition to anyone," he says.
