Jackknifed truck triggers 'butterfly effect' of crashes

Crashes on Auckland's Southern Motorway have caused significant delays for commuters heading south on Friday morning.

First, a truck jackknifed just after the Ellerslie off-ramp around 5:15am, blocking two lanes. Police say no other vehicles were involved in the crash and the driver is believed to be unhurt.

The second significant accident was a five-car nose-to-tail crash just south of Market Rd. Police also believe no one was hurt in this accident.

There have also been a number of minor fender benders. Police say they're largely the result of a "butterfly effect" stemming from the early morning truck crash.

Both accident scenes are now clear, but NZTA is warning motorists to expect long delays.

Auckland Transport's traffic map shows heavy congestion in both directions on that stretch of the Southern Motorway.
