A Hastings baker says he's lucky to be alive after a bourbon bottle was thrown through his car windscreen while he was driving late last night.

Caleb Olsen was driving to work on the Hawke's Bay Expressway around 11pm when someone in an oncoming vehicle threw the 1-litre Jim Beam bottle.

It smashed his windscreen as he approached the Ngaruroro River bridge and hit him in the shoulder, but he was otherwise uninjured.

On Facebook, the Hastings father commented that he was feeling lucky to be alive.

Police say the actions of whoever threw the bottle are "reckless in the extreme".

"Fortunately, he is uninjured but is understandably very shaken by what has happened," says Constable Ben Dalton, who attended the incident.

"The person who threw this bottle could have killed or seriously injured the driver."

A forensic examination of the bottle has been completed and police are sending the results off for examination.

Police say they take the matter very seriously and it's concerning that someone could be this stupid.

"If located they will likely be facing serious charges," says Constable Dalton.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Hawke's Bay Police on 06 873 0500 or information can be left anonymously with Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
