Music, movies and books are all moving online, and that is coming at a big price for some Auckland libraries staff.

Jobs are expected to go at libraries across the region, however it is not yet known how many are on the line.

Auckland Council general manager of Libraries and Information Mirla Edmundson says it's the first of several significant changes at Auckland libraries.

"To be as efficient as possible, we plan to reallocate resources, which may result in adjusted and reduced staffing levels across the Auckland Libraries network," she says.

A hiring freeze for permanent staff has been in place since the middle of the year.

"That protects our permanent staff members by not recruiting new people into the business. We know there will be a reduced head count and fulltime equivalent numbers at the end of it."

Ms Edmundson says staff will be given the chance to apply for different roles.

Shifting consumer demand is behind many of the changes, as well as a desire to align with the council's new organisational strategy.

There's around 1,100 permanent and part-time library staff across the Auckland network.

A proposal has not yet been presented to staff, however the changes are expected to be finalised in December 2016.
