Judgment day at Bakel's Pie Awards

It'll be a case of who ate all the pies today – 5,000 of them to be exact. Judging gets underway in this year's Bakel's Pie Awards this morning.

Mark Southon - resident chef on TV3's The Cafe - says the judges are looking for several key things.

"A nice taste and crumbly pastry would be great. Obviously the fillings as well - that’s the second most important thing in a pie, it needs to taste good," he says.

"It needs to have texture as well in the filling. It doesn't want to all mix together so there's one texture and flavour throughout."

Mr Southon says he'll be skipping breakfast this morning so he can do justice to the offerings.
