Today is marked as one of the biggest days on the social calendar for Christchurch and much of the South Island.

Addington Cup Day is expected to attract thousands of punters, racegoers and racing enthusiasts throughout the day.

Here are some key tips for you to survive:

Ladies, make sure you pack some sensible and comfortable shoes for when those heels become a bother later in the day.

Don't forget to take some extra make-up and lippy for those mid-afternoon touch ups.

Guys, today is a classy day so remember to tuck those shirts in and make sure your tie is done up if you want to look suave.

Also, remember to nugget your shoes to make them shine and look slick.

For everyone enjoying today's festivities, wear daywear not nightwear, dress accordingly and don't be afraid to be creative.

Bring plenty of sunscreen - it is expected to be a warm day (by South Island standards) and you don't want to leave looking like a lobster.

Finally, while there may be plenty of drinks flowing, make sure you do drink plenty of water to keep yourself in top shape.

Most of all, have fun and win large!
