Kelly Tarlton's is throwing its support behind a campaign to get rid of plastic bags.

It's World Oceans Day today, and the Auckland sea life aquarium is urging people to think about where their plastic bags end up.

Marketing manager Claire Wheeler says they're offering an incentive to anyone prepared to give them up.

"Everybody that came in this weekend and anybody that comes in on World Oceans Day and gives us a plastic bag will be given a reusable eco-bag in exchange."

A study earlier this year estimated between 4 and 12 million tonnes of plastic is dumped in the ocean every year – more than the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

There's also a diving mission planned to collect rubbish from the seabed at Okahu Bay.
