John Key is being accused of "breath-taking hypocrisy" over climate change, just days after returning from the Paris summit. Greenpeace expects the Government to issue new oil exploration permits before the end of the year. Greenpeace executive director, Dr Russel Norman, is now questioning Mr Key's commitment to tackling climate change.

"The New Zealand government has made it clear that it wants to find oil so it can be extracted and burned so oil companies can make money, but from the point of view of future generations that's a catastrophe."

Dr Norman wonders why Mr Key would endorse permits which will burn "huge stores of underground carbon."

At the Climate Change Conference, Mr Key was one of 40 leaders arguing fossil fuel subsidies need to be phased out.
