The founder of child poverty group KidsCan is vigorously denying allegations of improper spending.

Former staff members are accusing the charity of spending money on "champagne lunches" for potential donors at expensive Auckland restaurants.

KidsCan CEO Julie Chapman acknowledges the charity has spent money on wining and dining in the past, but says it introduced a no alcohol policy three years ago.

The charity also stressed that taxis were put on as a contribution to those attending work related events outside of work hours.

Kidscan says all its accounts are independently audited, and there's been no suggestion of any irregularities.
