A Christchurch musician who died when he was hit by a train yesterday is being described as a "loving man" with a great sense of humour.

Richard Chandler, 52, was cycling at the Fendalton Rd railway crossing when he was struck.

He was well-known in the community and was the associate principal bassoon in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. He was also an accomplished pianist and piano tutor.

Chief executive of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Gretchen La Roche says Mr Chandler will be sorely missed.

"He had a very distinctive laugh which we heard often and he was a very warm-hearted and kind person," she says.

A tribute to the musician was also posted on Facebook from the the Christchurch School of Music.

"He was a wonderful musician and a kind and generous friend. The Christchurch music community has lost a very special man. Our thoughts are with his family," the school said.

Mr Chandler was also a keen photographer and traveller.
