The mother of a promising rugby league player whose throat was slashed with a broken bottle says New Zealand's justice system is "f***ed up" for considering her son's killer for parole so soon after his sentencing.

In a post on Facebook, Terry Wilson says upon arriving home from a trip to Mahi, she received a letter notifying her of Vincent Skeen's parole hearing.

The letter explained the hearing was scheduled for September 19 - just over a month after Skeen was sentenced to five years and two months' prison for the manslaughter of Tipene.

Tipene died from blood loss following a fight with Skeen at a Grey Lynn party in November 2014.

Ms Wilson said the letter hadn't even given her family "time to exhale" following a lengthy court process that came to an end on August 16.

Many comments on the post expressed disgust that Skeen was being considered for parole so early, with some expressing interest in protesting on the day of the hearing.

In a statement read to the court by the Crown prosecutor last month, Ms Wilson said the impact of her son's death was "indescribable".

Outside court she said "justice was not served" and called Skeen's sentence "absolutely heinous" for such a "horrendous crime".

During the trial, Skeen's lawyer said her client was "extremely remorseful", and was going to have carry the guilt of Tipene's death for the rest of his life.
