Police officers are used to saving lives - but most are probably not as adorable as this one.

Constable Gaylene Rice heard meowing coming from the car park at the Manurewa police station on Halver Rd at around 6:45 this morning.

As she approached the clothing bin the meowing became louder, and upon closer inspection she found a tiny kitten wrapped in a cardigan dumped in front of the bin.

The officers at the station have dubbed her Manurewa Molly, and she’s fitting in well - but is unlikely to be on purrtrol today.

"She’s been asleep under my desk all morning; she must've been out all night," Const. Rice said.

Molly is a name commonly given to female moggy cats, like a male is known as a 'Tom' cat.

Const. Rice said the officers would love to keep Molly as a station cat, but she may be too little at the moment. She said Molly is "tiny" - no more than 6-8 weeks old.

"She's eating from a plate but I think she might need round-the-clock feeding - we've had loads of offers to take her on our Facebook page, including some cat rescues."

Molly is said to be "very smoochy" too.

A snap of another officer and their latest recruit was posted on the Counties Manukau police station Facebook page this morning, saying the kitten was fitting in purrfectly.
