A Kiwi dance company is proving there is art in just about everything, even that most mundane of everyday items - the shopping trolley.

The New Zealand Dance Company (NZDC) has combined five dancers with five ordinary supermarket trolleys into one extraordinary performance.

In 20 minutes, the dancers display everything from heartache to joy and love.

"We're really interested in movement of all kinds so in a way the gliding motion of the supermarket trolley, the ones that don't have a wobbly wheel is actually a beautiful thing," says NZDC CEO and artistic director Shona McCullagh.

This is democracy through dance. Some ballet is aloof and elitist but the supermarket is the one place left where everyone meets. And outside in Aotea Square everyone can relate.

"For me it's just sort of [about] different people from different walks of life - where do they come together? The supermarket. And it shows a little bit of humanity and a little bit of play in that," says dancer Carl Tolentino.

It's acrobatic and spectacular, but there is also something touching and profound in the performance.

"There's the idea of all moving together for a common purpose. There's a scene where Carl kind of gets left out, [a] lonely boy trolley scene, and he needs somebody. These are poignant little moments... we all share," Ms McCullagh says.

It's a performance that could inspire everyone.

"I thought it was amazing - the next time I go to Countdown I'll be doing something different with my trolley!" says Auckland Live director Robbie Macrae.

Just watch out for wobbly wheels.

Trolleys will be performed by the New Zealand Dance Company from 13 to 16 December at 12pm and 2pm, as part of Auckland Live Summer in the Square.
