A New Zealand soldier is recovering in hospital after being injured during live firing practice in Afghanistan.

The soldier, who is serving with the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamiyan Province, was injured when an unknown object - possibly a ricocheting bullet - penetrated his protective eyewear and entered his eye.

The Defence Force says the soldier received initial treatment by colleagues before being airlifted to Bagram Air Base for surgery.

He is currently in a stable condition awaiting a transfer to a military hospital in Germany for further treatment.
