A former New Plymouth Boys' High School student has claimed top prize at the illustrious, all-Australian 'bogan and bogette' competition in Darwin, on our trans-Tasman neighbour's national day.

Simon "Simmo" Sadgrove kept the fact he was a New Zealander under wraps until he was named winner -- but was allowed to keep the coveted accolade as a result of what NT News referred to as his "strong mullet game".

He stated the mullet, which guided him to victory at the Darwin Turf Club, is a hairstyle he's been fashioning for a long time now.

"I've had my mullet for about three years, I'm very comfortable with it," he said.

"I have to buy a new pair of pluggers every month because I keep breaking them, and I got pink eye in Bali."

Mr Sadgrove, who claims to be an employee of Pizza Hut, took the opportunity to brag about his achievement in true bogan fashion on Facebook.

Sadgrove's female equivalent, who is known by the pseudonym "Chicken Lips", spoke in greater detail about the magnitude of the accomplishment.

"I've been an aspiring bogan since I was five-years-old," she said.

"I'm now 47".
