Hundreds of dollars have been donated to LGBT support group Rainbow Youth in the name of Brian Tamaki, after the controversial pastor claimed earlier this week that gay people and sinners were responsible for earthquakes.

Rainbow Youth executive director Duncan Matthews says many of the donations have been accompanied by messages of support.

"Ones that have been going around are things like: 'Love wins, not Brian Tamaki'," he says.

"We're really enjoying it in the office, watching as they come in, reading them out, having a bit of a laugh."

Mr Matthews says it's great that New Zealanders are taking positive actions to show their support for the LGBT community.

A similar trend emerged following the election of Donald Trump and his anti-abortion vice-president Mike Pence earlier in November, with pro-choice supporters donating to Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood, which provides reproductive health services across the United States, has received more than 200,000 donations since the November 8 election - at least 46,000 of those were made in Mr Pence's name.
